M-Tech ships its product with a wealth of built-in connectors that allow for ultra-flexible integration with many systems, including Unix boxes and mainframes. M-Tech designed the product to use open communication standards, such as SOAP, to let it manage passwords and identities on heterogeneous networks without requiring additional software on target systems. Our testing showed that its SOAP interfaces are secure; M-Tech uses 128-bit AES to store sensitive data and information transmitted among M-Tech components.

Hitachi ID Privileged Password Manager (ID-Archive) is a system for securing privileged passwords across large numbers of devices. It works by regularly randomizing privileged passwords on workstations, servers and applications. Random passwords are encrypted and stored on at least two replicated servers. Passwords may be disclosed:

  1. To administrators, after they have authenticated and their requests have been authorized.
  2. To applications, replacing embedded passwords.
  3. To Windows workstations and servers, which need them to start services.

Alternately to password disclosure, access may be disclosed by temporarily placing an authorized user into a privileged security group on a managed device.

Password changes and disclosure are closely controlled and audited, to satisfy policy and regulatory requirements.

Hitachi ID Group Manager (ID-Access) is a self-service solution that enables business users to manage security groups.

Security groups are used by systems and applications to determine what a user has access to. For example, in a Windows environment, user membership in Active Directory groups determines what shares, folders, printers, e-mail distribution lists and other network resources a user can access.

While IT staff generally understand security groups, most business users do not. This makes the interaction between business users and IT staff slow and frustrating for both parties.

The Group Manager user interface enables business users to request things they understand (e.g., access files on a given folder or send documents to a given printer). Group Manager automatically identifies the groups a user would require to perform the desired action and submits an appropriate workflow request to the appropriate group owner or other authorizer, asking for the relevant group membership.

Group Manager improves user service, reduces IT support cost and delay and ensures that group membership is appropriately authorized before being granted.

Hitachi ID Access Certifier (ID-Certify) is a Hitachi ID Systems solution for distributed review and cleanup of user entitlements. Access Certifier closes the gap between business process, which should determine what user rights are appropriate, and Authentication / Authorization / Audit infrastructure (AAA), where user rights are actually stored and enforced.

Access Certifier ensures that user access rights are current and appropriate by periodically requiring business stake-holders to review user profiles, login accounts and security group memberships. Different stake-holders can be asked to review different users: managers review their direct subordinates, application owners review the users of their applications and security group owners review their memberships.

Using access certification, stake-holders identify no-longer-employed users, unneeded accounts and inappropriate security group memberships. A workflow engine captures these changes, sends them to suitable authorizers for review and -- if they are accepted -- automatically deactivates inappropriate login accounts and group memberships on sensitive systems.

Electronic signatures capture the actions of stake-holders, creating a trail of accountability for access rights that remain after certification and cleanup are complete.
